Behind the scenes
Nothing tells you more about a brand than the people behind it! Tim and Robbert, two designers/creators with a shared passion for surfing, sailing and sustainable quality, met while studying in Amsterdam. After several years they came up with the idea for Dick Moby on a surf trip, acknowledging the plastic pollution of the ocean. They formulated a simple goal: to turn plastic waste into high quality sunglasses.
Probably, as a customer, you have some questions about this waste. What exactly is meant by waste? How does it work?
This is what Dick Moby team says:
‘We can’t just melt down any type of used plastic and transform it into quality shades. To accomplish our goal we need a specific type of plastic waste. At the moment, our sunglasses are manufactured from biodegradable acetate. This creates no additional plastic waste.
But hey, we’re not stopping there. We have teamed up with the Surfrider Foundation, TerraCycle and Mazzucchelli to find and process recycled acetate into high quality, Dick Moby sunglasses. For this project we allocate 10% of our revenues.
We’re on a mission and we’re positive that we will get there if we keep up the pace. Like they say: Rome wasn’t built in a day’.
Check this funny video about how the sunglasses are born (roller-coaster moment is great).
The coloured frames are made from M49 bio-acetate and are 100% biodegradable.
The black frames are made from 97% recycled industrial plastic waste.
Dick Moby also has an optical line, it’s available in specialized optical stores.
